Linux supports a special block device called the loopback device, which
maps a normal file onto a virtual block device. This package contains
programs for setting up and removing the mapping between files and loopback
devices.

Block loopback devices should not be confused with the networking loopback
device, which is configured with the normal ifconfig command.
